Evening Panel Discussion
Employee Engagement in a Downturn
6pm | October 14th 2008 | BAFTA | London

In a slowing economy and an uncertain business environment, employee engagement has a bigger role than ever to play in driving success. Senior management can become distracted from people issues by concerns for the bottom line, and a high performance culture can become a culture of fear for the future and job insecurity can replace loyalty and enthusiasm.
The challenge facing HR Directors is how to maintain (and measure) engagement, how to get senior management buy-in by demonstrating the correlation between engagement, performance and efficiency – and how to make sure the people strategy remains a central part of business strategy.
Topics to be discussed include:
Alternatives to financial reward to keep employees engaged and motivated
How will different generations respond to what might be their first downturn - and how to keep each engaged?
Measurement – are engagement surveys enough? Are they really effective?
The challenge of maintaining engagement of “survivors” during a redundancy process
How to keep board and senior management focussed on people issues instead of “fire-fighting”
Following the presentations a lively Q & A discussion will take place, offering the perfect opportunity to challenge the panelists’ methodologies and benchmark your own practices. The discussions then continue informally over a glass of wine and canapés, allowing you to network with your peers.
